ganesh chaturthi 2023 Rituals & Celebration
Lord Ganesha is also known as Vighnaharta, which means he helps remove obstacles. He is very important in Hinduism, and many ceremonies start with worshipping him. People start getting ready for the Ganesha festival months ahead by making idols of Lord Ganesha. During Ganesh Chaturthi, there are four main rituals: Pranapratishtha, Shodashopachara, Uttarpuja, and Visarjan puja. People decorate their homes with flowers and colorful rangoli designs. They also bring clay idols of Lord Ganesha into their homes. These beautiful Ganesha idols are placed in places like puja pandals, homes, offices, and schools on the day of Chaturthi.
During Ganesh Chaturthi, a priest does a special ceremony called Pranapratishtha by saying a mantra. Then, they do 16 different rituals called Shodashopachara puja. They offer Modak, a tasty sweet dumpling from Maharashtra, to Lord Ganesh because it’s his favorite treat. They also give Lord Ganesh other sweets and fruits during the ceremony. People celebrate this festival by singing religious songs, dancing to drum music, and making yummy food. The third big part of Ganesh Chaturthi is Uttarpuja, when they say goodbye to Lord Ganesh. On the 10th and last day, they put the idol of Lord Ganesha in a nearby river with love and respect. This is called Ganesh Visarjan. People say, “Ganapati Bappa Morya, Purchya Varshi Laukariya,” which means, “Goodbye Lord Ganesha, please come back next year.”
